Dentistry is one of the few NHS services where you have to pay a contribution towards the cost of your care. This page explains how these charges work.
There are 4 main categories of NHS dental care:
Emergency dental care in a primary care NHS dental practice. This includes treatment to give pain relief, a temporary filling or cementing a loose crown.
Examination, diagnosis (including x-rays/radiographs as required), scale and polish, oral hygiene advice, fluoride varnish applications and fissure sealant placement.
Everything in Band 1, plus fillings, removal of teeth or root canal treatment. It also includes additions of teeth to dentures.
Everything in Band 1 or 2, plus complex treatment such as crowns, bridges, dentures or any treatment requiring laboratory work.
You do not pay for individual items separately. One charge covers each completed course of treatment.
The NHS does not provide cosmetic treatment such as tooth whitening, which improves the appearance of your teeth but does not have a health benefit or clinical necessity.
